The Kinds of Belts

There are three, not including the seat belts that help keep you safe. They're the timing belt, serpentine belts, and drive belts.

The timing belt, or timing chain if you're driving a newer model, connects the crankshaft to the camshaft. It helps them move in sync while also preventing other parts from hitting one another.

Drive belts, which are also called V-belts, work off the crank pulley. They run systems such as the radiator fan and water pump. The serpentine belt, on the other hand, works with the crank pulley, idler pulley, and tensioner. It helps run such systems as the alternator and power steering.

Belts don’t last forever, unfortunately. Check yours regularly to monitor their condition. If yours go bad, that can lead to problems.

How to Spot Issues With Your Belts

Signs of failure include:

• Cracks or shallow grooves in the belts
• Frayed belt edges
• Overly slack or loose belts
• Belts that are too tight to run
